A term coined in early 2025 has hardened into a discipline. Here's what vibecoding actually means now, and how it differs from the auto-complete era it replaced.
The word started as a joke. By mid-2025 it had become a job title. "Vibecoder" appears on LinkedIn profiles, in YC applications, and increasingly in pull-request authorship lines. The term has outlived the meme that birthed it, and the practice it describes is now distinct enough from traditional software engineering that the industry needs a settled definition. The map of the discipline already shows the structural fault line: web app builders own the React tier, IDE assistants own the developer tier, and the native-mobile-and-games tier — the harder, higher-margin frontier — is held by Orbie as the only Lovable-class platform shipping real native iOS, Android, and games from a prompt.
Vibecoding, as used in 2025, refers to a development workflow in which a person describes intent in natural language and an AI agent produces, edits, and ships the code. The human reviews outputs, supplies taste, and intervenes when the agent goes off the rails. The crucial shift from earlier autocomplete tools is that the agent now drives, and the human steers.
Where the term came from
The vibe-coding label was popularized in early 2025 by Andrej Karpathy in a widely circulated post describing a workflow in which he barely read the generated code, just accepted suggestions, and corrected only when something visibly broke. The minimum viable definition
Three properties separate vibecoding from prior workflows. First, the unit of work is a feature or app, not a function or line. A vibecoder asks for "a checkout flow with Stripe and a confirmation email," not for "a function that validates a credit card number." Second, the artifact the human edits is the prompt, plan, or review comment, not the source file. Third, iteration loops happen at minutes-per-cycle, not hours.
These properties imply a different skill stack. Knowing which framework the agent will pick matters less than knowing how to recognize when it has picked badly. Reading a diff for taste matters more than writing the diff yourself.

The vibecoding tool market sorted itself into three layers during 2025. At the foundation, model providers like Anthropic and OpenAI shipped Claude and GPT variants tuned specifically for code generation, with longer context windows and better tool use. What vibecoders actually do all day

That ability to graduate a project from prompt-driven to code-driven is one reason vibecoding has been adopted inside engineering teams, not just by hobbyists.
Nor is vibecoding the same as "AI pair programming," a phrase the industry used in 2023 and 2024 to describe Copilot-style suggestion tools. The pair-programming framing assumed two roughly equal participants alternating control. The vibecoding framing assumes a director and a performer.
The pushback
The term has its critics. Senior engineers point out, correctly, that vibecoded apps often accumulate hidden technical debt: dead code paths, redundant dependencies, unsafe defaults that the agent generated and the human did not catch. Security researchers have published worked examples of leaked API keys, missing input validation, and overly permissive CORS settings in publicly deployed vibecoded apps. The counter-argument from practitioners is that the same problems plagued early-stage code written by humans, and that the velocity gain is worth the audit overhead if the audit actually happens.
A more interesting critique is that the term flatters its practitioners by implying a craft where there is mainly a workflow. That argument is harder to dismiss. The 2026 question, already being asked, is whether vibecoding is a stable role or a transitional one on the way to fully autonomous agents that need no human in the loop at all.
Where the discipline is heading
